Integrative Medicine
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine combines modern medicine with complementary therapies and dietary and lifestyle intervention. The aim is to achieve symptom relief by addressing the underlying cause.
What happens in a consultation?
Integrative medicine has a strong emphasis on disease prevention and as such, consultations tend to be longer than a standard GP appointment. You will be asked a lot of questions about your symptoms, your diet and your lifestyle. Relevant examinations will be conducted and a treatment plan will be discussed.
Will I need any tests?
Sometimes investigations are necessary to determine the cause of your symptoms. This may include blood tests, stool / urine tests and imaging such as x-ray or ultrasound. The cost of some of these tests are covered or partially covered by medicare.
Note that functional pathology tests (such as IgG food intolerance testing and stool tests for gut microflora analysis) are NOT covered by medicare. This testing is conducted through BeFunctional Labs, a division of Australian Clinical Labs. See here for more information, including prices: BeFunctional Home - BeFunctional Labs
What treatment will I receive?
Integrative treatment plans will often involve dietary and lifestyle changes. Additionally, prescription medications and / or supplements (nutritional and/or herbal) may be advised.
